Description: The Skarn is an agile, long-limbed quadruped expertly bred for incredible speed and endurance in the unforgiving landscapes of Keldrath. Its sleek hide stretches tightly over powerful muscles, displaying hues of dusty grey and dry-bone tan, often darkened by sweat and the grime of relentless travels. With a narrow, lizard-like face, this creature features nostrils that seal against swirling dust and a forked tongue that flickers to detect subtle shifts in wind and warmth. While it lacks scales, the Skarn's skin possesses a dry, reptilian sheen and is adorned along its flanks with short keratinous ridges that stiffen in moments of stress or excitement. Rather than serving as a defense mechanism, these growths act as primal indicators of its emotional state. Its deep-set, slitted eyes remain unblinking—perfectly adapted for the sun-bleached roads and expansive plains it traverses. Equipped with long, padded feet, the Skarn boasts three toes for males and four for females, each ending in blunt claws optimized for traction over gravel, scree, and crumbling ruin-stone. Its strong, muscular tail not only aids in balance during rapid maneuvers but also allows for swift navigation across the most challenging terrains. The Skarn is truly a marvel of evolution, uniquely designed to thrive in the harshest conditions.
Behaviour: The Skarn is a remarkably docile and obedient creature, yet it possesses an unsettling silence. Instead of the typical vocalizations of whinnies or calls, it communicates through deep throat clicks and expressive postures—arching its spine or stiffening its tail to convey its feelings. The bond between the Skarn and its rider is forged through a sacred ritual known as "first saddle," which unfolds over several days. During this time, the rider builds a relationship with the Skarn while crafting a saddle tailored to its unique shape and the arrangement of its loin ridges. Once the saddle is completed, the rider undertakes a momentous journey to Nagithel, just an hour's ride from Endring. Here, the bond is solidified as they share water from the sacred lake. The Skarn recognizes its bonded master through scent and tone. In moments of fear, the Skarn instinctively bolts towards the open ground with deliberate speed, shunning confinement and expressing a dislike for stone walls. However, with gentle handling and patience, it can be taught to navigate ruins and underground paths, revealing its potential beyond initial apprehensions.
Handling: Keep lightly burdened to maintain speed and stamina. Avoid prolonged confinement or sudden sounds, which can cause stress responses. Ideal conditions include open terrain, light breeze, and wide sightlines. Feeds on dry Sunbulb leaves and Rimeleek vines; drinks sparingly. Comes towards the master's whistle.
