General Information
Name: Veldstone
Class: Oreborn
Type: Mineral
Colour: Matte dark umber with streaks of tarnished brass
Smell: Earthy and faintly bitter when chipped; sharp mineral tang when heated
Description: Veldstone is found in layered mineral bands within solid, weathered rock, often revealed through surface mining or shallow pit excavation. Its brittle, plate-like outer layers break away easily, exposing a dense, metal-rich core. Although it may appear visually unremarkable, Veldstone's refined metal serves as the backbone of human technology, tools, and weaponry. It is among the most sought-after materials for smiths in Keldrath.
Properties: High heat endurance and conductivity, high durability and stability, and resistance to corrosion, though it dulls with long use unless treated.
Harvesting & Processing
Harvesting: The ore is mined in large chunks. Once fully extracted, the brittle outer layers are chipped away using a pick or wedge to reveal the brassy interior. This interior is then transported in Flaxroot baskets for further processing. The discarded outer layers are not used.
Processing: Flamor is essential for maintaining the extremely high temperatures required to forge Veldstone. At peak temperatures, Veldstone can partially melt, allowing for an ###additive### to be mixed in before it is removed from the heat. This process further hardens the Veldstone and is used to create the highest quality weapons. When the Veldstone is glowing orange, it should be shaped using long, steady hammer strokes rather than abrupt blows to preserve the grain integrity. Once the final shape has been forged, tempering the glowing hot Veldstone can be done in containers filled with Blackoil. If needed, Grithvine slivers are used to finely sharpen the edges.
Storage: Very stable and durable; keep the cores in dry crates or flaxroot baskets. Weapons remain stable but benefit from occasional oiling and sharpening to maintain quality. Tools require very little maintenance.
